Current and former officials stated that an intelligence officer traveling in India this month with the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency reported symptoms consistent with the so-called Havana syndrome, suggesting that the mysterious incident affecting US officials since 2016 may escalate.

 

The details of the incident are still under investigation, and officials have not yet determined whether the CIA officer was targeted because the officer was traveling with Director William Burns or for other reasons. If the incident was caused by a hostile intelligence agency, it may not know that the officer was traveling with Burns.

Officials have been trying to determine the cause of these symptoms. Although some officials are convinced that they are attacking and that one or more opposing powers are responsible, the intelligence agencies have not yet come to any clear conclusions.

 

Theories abound, including that injuries are by-products of surveillance technology, or they are intentional attempts to cause harm, but all of these are unproven.

 

Nonetheless, current and former officials stated that Burns was angry about the incident in India. Some former officials said that if this is an attack and the confrontational forces are responsible, then the mission against Burns would constitute a serious escalation.

What causes Havana syndrome?

It has been five years since it was first reported, and doctors and scientists have yet to determine the cause of Havana syndrome. Since then, different theories have become popular-from mental illness to some kind of sonic weapon.

However, according to a report from the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), microwave radiation has become a "reasonable" cause.

 

Is it just a stress-related situation?

The other part completely rejected this syndrome, saying that the stressful environment of foreign missions was the reason for the symptoms of American diplomats.

 

According to the BBC, Robert W. Baloh, a professor of neurology at the University of California, Los Angeles, called it a massive psychogenic (stress-related) disorder. Baloh said this situation is similar to people feeling uncomfortable when they are told that they have eaten contaminated food, even if there is nothing wrong with it.

 

"When you see large-scale psychogenic illnesses, there are usually some potentially stressful situations. As far as Cuba is concerned, embassy employees—especially the CIA agents who were first affected—are definitely under pressure. In," the BBC quoted Barlow as saying.

Barlow said that as the report spread, US embassy officials became "highly vigilant" and "fear" and regarded daily symptoms such as brain fog and dizziness as Havana syndrome.

 

Burns has made investigating abnormal health incidents attributed to Havana syndrome a top priority, creating a target group to investigate these incidents and improve the health care of those injured by the incident.

 

Officials said that although State Department diplomats and military members were also affected, nearly half of the known cases involved CIA officials.
